Sustainable forest management aims to provide the use of forest resources to meet human needs without compromising the ability of production and environmental balance of the forest. This objective can only be achieved when the production process respects the principles and sustainability criteria are based on three pillars: environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable.

The Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the production of timber, non-timber forest products and environmental services maintain processes without harming biodiversity, productivity and ecology.

The Socially beneficial forest management helps both local people and society at large to enjoy long term benefits and also provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources and adhere to plans for long-term management.

Economically viable forest management means that forest operations are structured and managed so as to be sufficiently profitable, without generating financial profit at the expense of forest resources, the ecosystem or affected communities.
